Building The Ocean Decade's Digital Ecosystem

Ocean data plays a vital role in advancing scientific research and shaping sustainable marine policies. However, significant observation gaps remain, particularly in developing areas. Data from observations and forecasts are often scattered, difficult to access, and many communities lack the tools and skills needed to discover and use ocean information effectively.

A well-integrated digital ocean data ecosystem can support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 14, “Life Below Water,” by delivering timely, interoperable ocean insights. These can inform evidence-based decision-making, enable responsible management of marine resources, and strengthen conservation initiatives.

To help close these gaps, the UN Ocean Decade is promoting the development of a global Digital Ecosystem that turns ocean observations into usable services for policy and planning. This system is built on three core pillars: ocean observing, open data exchange, and ocean forecasting. Together, these elements create a strong value chain for ocean data, forming the basis for sustainable ocean stewardship, improved climate resilience, and inclusive economic growth.
