Within the OPERA project, Capacity Development Activities have officially entered their operational phase, marking a significant milestone.
Starting on 13th of July, 2025, the FutureLearn platform will host the OPERA Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) – Set 1: Fundamentals of Ocean Forecasting, the first course in a series of online training programmes developed under OPERA’s Capacity Development Activities. The course is free of charge and delivered in English, with French subtitles available.
Over seven weeks, participants will complete seven sequential modules covering the entire ocean forecasting value chain. Topics include the physical processes governing ocean circulation, the numerical models used to simulate ocean dynamics, and the observing systems that provide critical data for forecasts. Learners will explore satellite and in situ observation networks, including Argo floats, moored buoys, and high-frequency radars, as well as the data assimilation techniques used to ensure models remain aligned with real-world conditions. The final modules focus on practical applications in fisheries management, coastal risk reduction, maritime safety, and environmental policy.

With approximately 21 hours of learning content, the course combines formative quizzes with a graded final assessment. Participants who successfully complete the programme will receive an official OPERA MOOC certificate issued through FutureLearn and accredited by the University of Abomey-Calavi – UNESCO Chair of Mathematical Physics and Applications. No prior knowledge of oceanography or ocean forecasting is required.

Mercator Ocean International coordinates the OceanPrediction Decade Collaborative Centre (DCC), an Ocean Decade structure dedicated to building a global community and technical framework for ocean prediction. The DCC operates through nine regional teams, including the African Regional Team. Within this framework, Mercator Ocean International implements the OPERA project in close collaboration with the African Seas Regional Team.
