Systems Highlight: Atlantic -Iberian Biscay Irish (IBI)- Ocean Physics Analysis and Forecast (IBI-PHY) System

The Atlantic -Iberian Biscay Irish (IBI)- Ocean Physics Analysis and Forecast (IBI-PHY) system provides high resolution ocean analysis and 10 days forecast products for the European North-East Atlantic façade in the framework of the Copernicus Marine Service. It operates within the IBI Monitoring and Forecasting Center (IBI-MFC), which is dedicated to delivering the most accurate analysis, forecast and reanalysis products for ocean physics, waves and biogeochemistry across the entire IBI region.

The IBI-PHY system is based on an eddy-resolving NEMO model application at 1/36° horizontal resolution and 50 vertical levels. The hydrodynamic forecast includes high frequency processes of paramount importance to characterize regional scale marine processes: tidal forcing, surges and high frequency atmospheric forcing, freshwater river discharge, wave forcing for the forecasting cycle, etc.

In particular, the forecast runs daily, generating several output products across the IBI domain: 3D daily ocean fields for the entire region, 3D hourly means for all coastal areas, hourly means for all surface variables, and 15-minute instantaneous values for selected surface variables. The product catalogue includes datasets related to temperature, salinity, sea surface height, currents, mixed layer depth.

The IBI-PHY core model application is developed by Mercator Ocean International (MOi), while NOW Systems oversees the transition to operations and operational production with the support of Centro de Supercomputación de Galicia (CESGA) for the high-performance-computing facilities.
